Strömsund is the secondlargest town in Jämtland, 100 km north of Östersund and just five kilometres from the Ulriksfors train stop. Here the waterfalls cascade down from the mountains, through graceful valleys with fairytale forests and lush agricultural villages. The area gained fame throughout Sweden as a result of Beppe Wolgers’ film Dunderklumpen. During your journey on Inlandsbanan you will pass through the centre of Hoting, but do pay a visit to other areas such as Hammerdal, Gäddede, Backe and Rossön.

Beppe’s own paradise
At Öhn, 8 km north-west of Strömsund, lies the Beppe Museum, which also offers refreshments. The museum is run by Beppe’s daughter and offers an opportunity to gain an insight into his multifaceted life as an author, painter and poet. He also participated in many TV and radio programmes, films and TV serials. The child in Beppe and the children close to him were very important to him and were a great source of inspiration, which is why they have been given plenty of room for fun and games. The children can dress up, paint Dunderklumpen models, meet Beppe’s dolls and see the animals. Music and literary events are arranged on some evenings in the summer. At the local heritage museum Hembygdsgården, beautifully located by the Ströms Vattudal lake in the centre of Strömsund, stands a six-metre high statue of the Giant Jorm from the film ”Dunderklumpen”. The vessel M/S Tärnan operates regular trips on the beautiful and magnificent Ströms Vattudal. Beppe too was captivated by its beauty, which is apparent in many of his written and painted works.

They have rarities such as a Mercedes Benz 300 SL with the so-called gull wing and King Gustav VI Adolf’s Daimler Princess with chassis from Vanden Plas. Apart from old luxury cars and royal vehicles, the museum also has a large selection of cars from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The motorcycles include both Harley Davidson and Indian but also rarities such as Neracar and Hägg of Sweden.

Tastebud experiences
A number of successful companies operate small-scale artisan food production in the area. Hillsands Getgård (goat farm) won gold for its blue cheese at the Swedish Artisan Food Championships in 2010 and Gårdscharken charcuterie in Fågelberget won silver for their air-dried sausage. If you want to satisfy more than your tastebuds, a trip along the Road of the Senses can be an enriching experience. In Hammerdal and the surrounding villages various producers arrange an open-house week. A farm dairy, an egg producer, a smithy, a bakery and a joinery are some of places you can visit.
